for up to date information on bridleways news and issues. A huge thank you to
Peter Tiley for getting the website up and running.

An awful lot of time
has been spent on making it an interesting and entertaining site. Check out the
lovely
photos of the committee!!!!(classic jumping position Fiona!) If anyone
has any photos that they would like to add to the member’s gallery then please
follow the link on the website or let Fiona have a copy.
Emailed newsletter????????
If
you have access to the internet then please let us know your email address
ASAP. As well as letting you have
your newsletter sooner and giving you updates on bridleways matters and events,
it will drastically cut down on production costs. Consequently, as a result,
the more money saved means more money to help towards events.

Past Events
Our annual Easter
Bonnet Parade and Easter Treasure Hunt were held on Easter Monday. Apologies
for any confusion over the correct day. 15 children turned up with some
fantastic bonnets and decorated ponies. Everyone got a lovely Easter rosette,
then had a treasure hunt followed by juice and a bun. Anyone who turned up
decorated on Sunday, please see Pat or Janice for a rosette.
Monthly meetings
KAREN DIXON – 17th May
As you all will know
by now, our celebratory speaker this year is Karen Dixon. Tickets are still on
sale and cost just £3 for members and £6 for non-members. Tickets will be available
on the monthly meeting or send a SAE to Fiona Tiley, The Old Barn, Clough Lane,
Oakworth, Keighley.
The meeting in March
was an entertaining and colourful talk by Mr Martin Dewar. Martin gave us all
an insight into what to look out for when buying a horse/pony.
Our next monthly
meeting will be held on 19th April. Our speaker this month will be,
back by popular demand, Mrs Norma Grubb of the Irish Draught Society. Norma
Grubb is a much respected breeder, producer and county level judge. The subject
this month is “Tips on Showing”. The juniors will be meeting at Springhead
stables at 5pm for hotdogs, then a practical demonstration. The seniors are
meeting at Highfield House Farm at 7pm for their practical demonstration. To
find Highfield House Farm – follow the road out of Oakworth towards Colne. You
will pass The Grouse Pub (being renovated) on the left, you then pass the
Yorkshire Water site on the left – Highfield House farm is the next track on
the right after then. We will all meet later, at the usual time of 8pm, at The
Old White Lion for a social and a TABLE

Ragwort Alert!
The BHS is holding the first of two annual ragwort awareness weeks
between the 4th and 8th April. Even though this week will
have passed by the time you get this it is an ideal time of the year to take
action against this deadly weed.
The BHS is using the initiative to encouraging horse owners to clear
paddocks of the small “rosette-stage” growths visible now, rather than waiting
until the plant is in bloom and ready to spread.
The biennial weed is one of the most common causes of poisoning in
horses and cattle, killing thousands every year, and its effects are
cumulative, so that small intakes over a long period of time have the same
effects as one large intake.
Ragwort contains alkaloids, which are poisonous to livestock as well as
humans, and causes potentially fatal liver damage in horses. Symptoms include
loss of condition, poor appetite, lethargy and photosensitisation (sunburn).
Some 6,500 animals were believed to have died in 2002 as a result of
ingesting the killer weed. This is a shocking figure of needless deaths. How
can you be sure that your horse is not ingesting this deadly substance?
Get out and clear your land of any rosettes you can find. Try and get
the whole root out if possible. A ‘rag fork’ makes this a simple task. Please
remember to wear gloves when handling ragwort – the poison can be absorbed
through human skin.
If you see ragwort on another property complain using the Ragwort
Control Act 2003.
How to register a complaint:
The introduction of the BHS-backed Ragwort Control Act in 2003, has
made it easier for DEFRA to act on complaints about ragwort and compel councils,
public bodies and landowners to clear the poisonous yellow-flowering plant.
Under the revised procedures for investigating ragwort, DEFRA issued 41
enforcement notices in 2004, compared to 11 in 2003. A DEFRA spokesman said
that in most cases, the notice had resulted in the weeds being cleared.
The DEFRA website advises: “First approach the owner/occupier of the
land on which the weeds are and ask them to take steps to clear the weeds.”
For ragwort alongside motorways or trunk roads, the complaint should be
referred to the Highways Agency (tel: 08457 504030), and for minor roads, the
local highway authority (see telephone directory). For ragwort on railway land,
call Network Rail (tel: 08457 114141).
If this fails, complainants should complete the four-page Weeds Act
complaint form (north of England: tel: 01270 754262; south: tel: 0117 959 8622;
ask for Weed 2 Rev 7/03).
