BRIDLEWAYS NEWS

The new SUSTRANS track at Cullingworth: Report by Gill Hill:

I have received a few comments about this new track. Just to set the record straight I have spoken to Geoff  McQuillan who is the manager for this part of the trail.

The track from Cullingworth to Queensbury is part of the cycle way network being built nationally.  This is to be primarily a cycle way with access encouraged to both walkers and Horse Riders.  Mr McQillan assured me that although the surface has been covered with tarmac, they were in consultation with the BHS throughout who advised them of suitability of surfacing, so you can be reassured that the tarmac used isn't the slippery kind we have been experiencing recently on our road surfaces.  I have also been made aware of the sizing of the Horse Styles and the difficulty large horses are experiencing.  I am still waiting for a reply on this one.

If you have any bridleways problems please contact Gill Hill on 01535 644868

MEETINGS

Norma Grubb Showing Demo

Due to an incident at Catterick Barracks, causing the A1 to close, Norma was unable to make our April meeting. However, her envoy, Gail Hargreaves and her Dad, Tony, came along to keep the show on the road. A demo for juniors was held at Springhead Stables and seniors at Highfield House Farm. An informative evening was had by all with plaiting workshops and practical advice on showing your horse in hand.

Karen Dixon

The celebrity speaker, Karen Dixon, was very popular. Karen spoke about her beginnings and career to the present time. She gave us all an entertaining and interesting talk on the thrills and spills of Horse Trials.

MONTHLY MEETINGS

Farriery Talk – June Meeting

Our June meeting was very well attended. Local farrier, Paul Rushden, gave us an interesting question and answer session on good farriery practice. This included how good farriery and remedial farriery can help your horse.

Next month – July 19th

The July meeting is about saddle fitting.

Carolyn Bostock works for The Saddle Co. Carolyn fits and measures horses for made to measure saddles. She also provides a saddle check service for those who are unsure if their saddle fits correctly. I’m sure that this will prove an educational evening for us all.

ANNUAL SHOW

Our annual show will be held on 21st August at the new venue of Haworth Road, Cullingworth. Many thanks to Robert and Ann Thompson for kindly agreeing to let us use their fields. The showground is opposite the Flappit Pub (the Bronte Vintage Gathering Showground)

As usual we are requesting help. If you can help in ANY way, then please let a committee member know ASAP.

FLIES!!

It’s that time of year again folks! Instead of shelling out a small fortune on various lotions and potions, why not try Gills recipe for fly repellent and midge repellent. The formula was in a horsy magazine a few years ago and it really does work (and it smells pleasant too)

FLY REPELLANT

15ml Citronella oil (available to order from local Chemists)

2 tablespoons Methylated Spirit

1 tablespoon washing up liquid

4 tablespoons vinegar

1 mug cold strong tea (2 teabags!)

Top up to 2 litres with cold water.

MIDGE REPELLANT

1 bottle of carrier oil (aromatherapy/wholefood shop)

1 bottle Citronella oil

Some killitch or Benzol Benzoate

(chemists)

Some Tea tree oil and Lavender oil

Make up to a creamy white thickish liquid, rub into main and tail. If too strong, let down with more oil and Killitch.

N.B. I haven’t actually used this one but I got the recipe from a reliable source.
