Haworth and Oxenhope District Bridleways Group
History
In October 1976 a number of horse riders, and other interested paries, met at a public meeting held in Marsh Chapel,
Oxenhope and the result was the forming of Haworth and Oxenhope District Bridleways Group. A first committe was elected from volunteers
from Secretary; John and Margaret Barnett, Treasurers; Jack Callaghan, Land-owner's representative; Kim Gardener, Junior Representative.
At the first committee meeting held at Haworth Moor Riding Centre, Oxenhope, a draft list of objectives for the group was drawn up to be put to the members. This was as follows:
1. To fight for the preservation of bridleways; work for an increase in the number and encourage good maintenance of those we have in the area.
2. To try to improve the standard of horse management and encourage an interest in horse/pony welfare generally
3. To encourage young riders
From an initial membership of 30 in 1976 the group had grown to 150 by 1983 and has continued to expand. It continues to work along the same lines with monthly meetings,
organised rides, shows, lessons etc. as well as the work on bridleways.
As more and more open land disappears under bricks and concrete, and as even the quietest of country lanes is now carrying more traffic than ever before,
the identification and preservation of bridleways must be an important objective of every rider.
