Bridleway matters

Since I have taken over as Bridleways officer I have been very impressed by the response from Bradford Met about all the problems I have had to report to them, from fallen trees, dropped gates, dumped rubbish etc. You may have noticed a lot of new footpath/bridleway signs which have gone up lately. Unfortunately one of them is causing a few problems. Isle Lane in Oxenhope, which has now been upgraded to bridleway is still not rideable. This is part of an Email which Darren Hinchliffe sent to me about Isle Lane. ‘Some clearance works have already been done to improve access and drainage along the route, the gated access from the top of the Lane has just been improved and hopefully in the next few months our works team can go in and carry out further improvement to the Lanes surface with a small digger. With regards the line of the proper route I have met with both neighbours and have agreed a wide range of improvements to the Lane, one of which does include waymarking. I would though like to note that improvements are likely to be ongoing and subject to the availability of funding for the next few years.’ In other words, it’s going to take time… I have arranged a meeting with Darren next week and along with talking about Isle Lane, I have done a survey of the bridleway network and have come up with 2 lists. One of blocked bridleways, and one of routes which we ride that are not officially bridleways on the map. I would like to get these latter ones upgraded to bridleway if possible.

July 26th BRIDLEWAYS 30TH BIRTHDAY PARTY

Saturday. It is 30 years since the first meeting of the Haworth and Oxenhope District Bridleways Group so to mark the occasion we thought it would be nice to throw a party. It will be at Oxenhope Community Centre between 7pm and 11.30. All members are invited and it is free. Non members are welcome but there will be a charge of £5.00 per head.

If you know any old members of the bridleways group, please can you get in touch with them or let Jane or Margaret know where they can be contacted. We will add them to our VIP list and they can attend as VIP members. The criteria for a VIP member is that they must have been a member over 5 years ago and have been a member for more than 5 years.

We need to know numbers for catering purposes so we would appreciate it if you could let us know if you are able to come and join in the celebration.

There will be music/disco, licensed bar and supper.

Past Events

Since the last newsletter we have had 3 monthly meetings, the speakers being John Lloyd on showing, Sarah Kreutzer on learning to listen and Megan Roughley on Western riding. All these talks seem to have been very much enjoyed and were well supported. We have also had 2 dressage competitions, our Cross Country and the Show. The results appear further on in the newsletter. Thanks to all our helpers. Also thanks go to Hilary Bailey for organising a very enjoyable trip to the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre, followed by a delicious pub lunch. Ten people went on Jane’s Spring ride in April and Amy and Rachel organised a dog show in May, and continue to provide the juniors with a varied and fun fixture list.

Break-ins

As you know, there have been 2 definate breakins/thefts lately, and several more rumoured ones, and lots of Emails flying about. The three vehicles listed below are in the police system and linked to recent thefts. If you see any of the vehicles, the Police say, on no account approach them, but ring 999 immediately.

A white transit N253 XAJ (these may be false plates)

A blue Golf YD51 XUM

A red Landcruiser R16 RBB

It might be a good idea to have these numbers on a piece of paper at your stables or in your car so that these registration numbers can be identified without any doubts.

Also on a safety subject, one of our members was sworn at and threatened when riding near Sandy Banks in Wilsden by a group of Asian youths in cars. Seemingly, this is a regular meeting place for them, so take care.

Ragwort

Your committee would like to do something about the enormous amounts of ragwort which are everywhere. We would ask all members to pull up and dispose of any ragwort in their own fields and vicinity(safely of course). Maybe we could also persuade other local offenders to do the same. If you know of places where there is a lot of ragwort , perhaps we could try to do something about it as a group, so that no member has to personally speak to a neighbour. Maybe we could produce a flyer.

Ring Angela if you know an area that is badly infested.
